The U.S.Census is critical and confidential!

For New Mexico, we must ensure that everyone gets counted in the U.S. Census, particularly because of the economic downturn we’re in. Just a 1 percent undercount could result in $750 million in lost federal assistance over the next ten years. That means serious cuts to housing assistance; small business loans; Medicaid; the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP); the School Lunch Program; the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC); the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Head Start, and early childhood programs.

The Census is 100% confidential, and should be completed by citizens and non-citizens alike. Your information is completely confidential, protected by law, and cannot be shared with any other government agencies, including law enforcement or immigration officials. By law, the U.S. Census Bureau can use your responses only to produce statistics.

If you already received an invitation to respond to the Census, please do so online, by phone, or by mail. Census takers will also be visiting homes between September and October to collect responses.
